Hiya MH, will the team be coming to do a show in Alderley Edge in Cheshire as this is a rly haunted place, many people around here have seen and heard some very weird things for years, and the place has loads of history for witchcraft and weird sightings and is also where it’s said King Arthur lies waiting to return and several people i know claim to have actually seen the ghost of Merlin, he even stood in the road one night and a poor man in his car had a right fright lol – thx MH, love the show!

Karl Beattie : Hello lovely people, sorry I’ve been a bit quiet but have been very busy. It does seem that you can’t turn on the wireless or see a newspaper without hearing or seeing mention of Chris Huhne, former wife Vicky Pryce and that speeding ticket…do we care?

There are literally 1000’s of husbands, wives, boyfriends and girlfriends taking speeding tickets for each other all over the country. I wonder how much money this is costing us! So what, it seems that it was all brought on by his vindictive ex to ‘bring him down’ personally I would love him to stay at least it shows that some politicians are like the rest of us.

What a waste of tax payers money, the police should be out there tackling real crime, which they seem more inept at doing year on year, and the courts should throw this sort of rubbish out. What do you think?

Here is a dark tale from Karl

By all accounts David Blake didn’t have a great respect for women and his actions toward them became more degenerated as he grew up so much so that it cost him his life.

David Blake live in Lady Pit Lane, Leeds, he was a steel erector by trade but unemployed was about to get married. He thought himself as a “…bit of a womaniser” however his attentions seemed more forced than welcomed. On 16th October 1934 the night before his wedding to Jean Whitehead, Blake took a young waitress by the name of Emily Yeomans for a walk, with one intention only…sex.

Emily 23, lived with her uncle at Garnet Place, Dewsbury Road, Leeds and worked nearby at the Lyons Cafe in the County Arcade, was viciously raped her and strangled, her partly clothed body was left in Middleton Woods.

Next day Blake carried on as normal and married his girlfriend. It was during the celebrations that he made his first mistake, he showed his best man, Albert Schofield, a report in the local paper about the Emily Yeomans murder the previous night. This seen as a very strange thing to do at the wedding.

Schofield’s unease was only compounded when he met Blake at the Mulberry Inn, Leeds the day after the wedding to find Blake was with another woman. This strange behavior started Schofield thinking, he knew that Blake had been out the night before the weeding with Emily Yeomans. The police had suggested that they were looking for a ‘man in a blue suit’ Blake was wearing such a suit on the day of the murder.

After a lot of soul searching Schofield finally went to the police with his suspicions and Blake was arrested and charged with Emily’s murder. Although the evidence at that time was only circumstantial it was forensics that sealed his fate, cat hair was found on his suit and wool fibres from his suit were found on Emily’s skirt.

Hair and fibres were found on both Blake’s suit and Emily’s skirt respectively, inexplicably linking them together.

A bit of good old detective worked was the last nail in Blakes coffin. A powder compact that three fellow waitresses positively identified as Emily’s was found at the house where Blake spent a night after the murder.

It was after Blake, 24, had been found guilty the Leeds Assizes on 16th December 1934, that the court heard he had served a three-year prison sentence after raping, robbing and almost choking to death a woman whom he had offered to walk home after missing her bus. Mr. Justice Goddard handed down the only just sentence of the day…death. He was duly hanged on this day 7th February, 1935 by Thomas Pierrepoint and Alfred Allen.

Normally this is where the story ends unless the executed is linked to another crime however there is still a bit more to tell.

Although Pierrepoint formally stated that the execution was ‘expeditiously carried out without a hitch’, the Home Secretary was questioned in Parliament by Mr. George Hicks, M.P., following allegations of a ‘…violent scene in the condemned cell at Armley Goal, Leeds before the execution of David Maskill Blake’ where ‘…one warder was seriously injured’. So it seems that Blake, as is always the case in men that attack women, was nothing more than a coward.

Tom Otter lived in lincoln early 1800’s
Met a young girl called Mary Kirkham, Mary bore tom a child and the laws stated at the time that Tom must betroth her (HE was already married) or face imprisonment.

So on the 3rd November 1805, he took mary as his wife.
That very night whislt walking back home , tom picked up a hedge stake a bludgeoned poor Mary to death with it.
It wasn’t long before the grisly murder was discovered and Tom was cast in chains and put on trial at “The Sun Inn ” Saxilby, Lincolnshire and was sentenced to Hang .
Mary’s body was put on a cart and transported to the sun inn where her blood spilt freely over the steps of the inn , where they say years after the stain could not be cleaned.

On the 14 th March 1806, Tom was fastened in Irons and hung on a high post (A GIBBET) , even this event was tainted in tragedy , as his body fell twice from the post , due to the weight of the irons and upon falling a second time his body crushed and killed a bystander.
This all took place on Tom Otters lane which is situated between Saxilby and Drinsey Nook on the lincolnshire/gainsborough A57

The murder weapon was kept for many years , and on the anniversary of the murder , the stake would be moved and put elsewhere
Many attempts to secure it with iron hoops failed, nothing could hold it.
The following morning it would be found at the murder scene wet with blood.
No-one knew who or what was moving it and eventually it was burned by the Bishop of Lincoln in the yard outside the Cathedral.

Today 5th Feb 207 years ago John White met his end at the Newgate Gallows. His crime, Cutting and maiming. Although the details of his crime are sketchy it is believed that White was a drunkard who, when in drink, was a violent and abusive man who “…could pick a fight with a saint”.

It is believed that 28th January 1806, White was drinking in his local tavern with his live-in lover, some reports say she …was his wife, however it was quite common for women to move into a man’s home and take his name without the actual marriage ceremony, living together was not so common then and having the same name kept the women from shame! A young mill worker with whom their rumours of an affair walked in and White suddenly went mad, ‘as though the devil himself had taken over his being’.

White was said to have attacked the young man with such ferocity that his face was sliced open, he lost an eye, an ear and his throat had deep lacerations. The defence cuts were so deep in his hands and arms that the nerves where damaged beyond repair and he lost the use of his right arm.

John White, although very sorrowful toward his victim after the event was found guilty and sentenced to hang, his attack was considered to have been carried out with no consideration of life, therefore death was his only forgiveness and absolution to be found at the end of a rope.

He went to the gallows firmly and stood upright as the hood and noose were placed over his head and neck respectively. It is said that he ‘danced the merry dance of slow strangulation’ for just over 8 minutes and HIS suffering was over, but his victim suffered for rest of his short life. Without the use of his arm and scarred for life the young mill, out of work and with no companion took to drink and drowned after falling into a river while under the influence. So John White was indeed responsible for the young mill workers death, just not on the night of the attack.

There is also one more execution that flies slightly against the ethos of this page as although the victim lived in England was indeed French by birth (her mother was French and her Father was English) and executed in Germany but all in all it is a short story that should be told.

Often when we talk of execution we tent to think of rogues, murderers and villains we rarely think of heroes…this is the exception. Violette Reine Elizabeth Bushell Szabo, GC, (26 June 1921 – 5 February 1945) was a World War II British-French secret agent.

Violette Szabo was born Violette Reine Elizabeth Bushell in Paris, France, on 26th June 1921, the second child of a French mother and an English taxi-driver father, who had met during World War I. The family moved to London, and she attended school in Brixton until the age of 14. At the start of World War II, she was working at the perfume counter of Le Bon Marché, a department store in Brixton.

Violette met Étienne Szabo, a French officer of Hungarian descent, at the Bastille Day parade in London in 1940. They married on 21 August 1940 after a whirlwind 42-day romance. Violette was 19, Étienne was 31. Étienne died from chest wounds at the Battle of El Alamein in October 1942, shortly after the birth of their only child, Tania, sadly he had never seen his daughter. It was Étienne’s death that made Violette, having already joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1941, decide to offer her services to the British Special Operations Executive (SOE).

She completing her training and went on to missions that undoubtedly helped us win the war. But it was her second mission that this brave woman took on the might and horror of what the Nazi’s could do in torture and won although she lost her life.

She was a passenger in a car that raised the suspicions of German troops at an unexpected roadblock that had been set up to find Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe of the Das Reich Division, who had been captured by the local resistance.
A brief gun battle ensued. Her Maquis minders escaped unscathed in the confusion. However, Szabo was captured when she ran out of ammunition, around midday on 10 June 1944, near Salon-la-Tour. Her captors were most likely from the 1st Battalion of 3rd SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment Deutschland (Das Reich Division).

She was transferred to the custody of the Sicherheitsdienst(SD) (SS Security Service) in Limoges, where she was interrogated for four days. From there, she was moved to Fresnes Prison in Paris and brought to Gestapo headquarters at 84 Avenue Foch for interrogation and torture. In August 1944, she was moved to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where over 92,000 women died. Although she endured hard labour and malnutrition, she managed to help save the life of Belgian resistance courier Hortense Clews.

Violette Szabo was executed, aged 23, by SS firing squad on 5th February 1945. Her body was cremated in the camp’s crematorium.

With students rioting over a few pounds, or police complaining about pensions, or politicians taking money in expenses that were not entitled too this one young 23 year old woman is worth more than them all put together. Violette Szabo I salute you.See more

On this day 79 years ago Ernest Brown met his end shortly after meeting Thomas Pierrepoint and potentially solved another case.

Ernest Brown was a groom, employed by wealthy cattle factor Frederick Ellison Morton who lived with his wife an…d child at Saxton Grange, a remote Yorkshire farmhouse.
It would seem that Frederick Morton made two mistakes the first was to marry Dorothy who was not only beautiful but promiscuous, the second fatal error was to employ Ernest Brown. Without these two factors in his life Mr. Morton would have probably gone on to enjoy his hard earned wealth into old age. However hindsight is a wonderful thing and that luxury isn’t afforded to any of us.

Soon after starting his employment Ernest Brown caught the eye of Dorothy Morton and the two started their illicit affair. The affair may have gone on for many years but for Brown’s raging and often violent jealousy. It seems that Brown had little, if no respect for his employer and left Saxton Grange after a disagreement over his duties. This was obviously a hotheaded reaction as he returned within a few days begging to have his job back; Frederick Morton felt pity for the man and reinstated his position. Instead of being grateful Brown took Morton’s kindest as a weakness and resented him and his own lowly status even more.

It is such a sad state of human misunderstanding that people take kindness as a weakness, when in truth kindness is the strongest and often the most difficult emotion and deed to carry out.

On bright but chilly morning of 5th September 1933 Frederick Morton went out for the day in one of his two cars leaving Ernest Brown and Dorothy Morton at the house together. Although Dorothy had ended the affair, Brown had other ideas and some time in the early evening they quarreled end with Brown striking Dorothy so hard she fell to the floor. He stormed out of the house leaving Dorothy in fear. Later that evening Dorothy Morton who had been joined by her companion, Ann Houseman, heard a shotgun go off. It was Brown and although he told them he was shooting rats, the women were so terrified they went to telephone the police but finding the phones were dead they locked themselves in an upstairs room in fear of their very lives.
At approximately 3.30am the house was rocked by an explosion outside, a fire soon followed and engulfed the garage. The two women, feeling their lives were in danger, fled the house and took refuge in near by fields. The fire was so intense and the heat so great no one could get close until 9am to inspect the damage. Inside the chard remains of the now collapsing garage were both of Frederick Morton’s cars, his body almost burned beyond all recognition was in one. He had been shot in the chest.

Brown’s three-day trial took place Leeds Assizes. Forensic evidence showed that the telephone lines had been severed by a knife that Brown had taken from the kitchen and that the explosion had been caused by the accelerant petrol, that had been spread around the garage, cars and the body of Frederick Morton.

The jury found 35-year-old Brown guilty, he was sentenced to death by Justice Humphreys and hanged by Thomas Pierrepoint (Albert’s Uncle) and assisted by Robert Wilson at Armley Gaol, Leeds, on 6th February 1934. He was thought to have uttered something on the gallows before disappearing into the darkness… “ought to burn” or possibly “Otterburn” which leads us to an unsolved murder in 1931.

Evelyn Foster – Otterburn – January 6th, 1931

In a hospital bed almost burned beyond recognition, Evelyn Foster a daughter of an Otterburn garage owner, did he best to describe how she came to be in such a terrible state. With great pain she whispered: “I gave a lift in my car to a man who was smartly dressed, wore a bowler hat and had a Tyneside accent. He wanted to go to Ponteland, about 25 miles away, to catch a Newcastle bus.”

She went on to say that the man ‘began touching her up’ during the journey when he ceased to obey her objections, Evelyn pulled into the verge and told him to get out whereupon he knocked her unconscious. When she came round she was now the passenger and the mysterious man was driving. He suddenly stopped the car and poured some liquid over her, she was still dazed by the blow given to her earlier so could do nothing but accept her fate. What happened next shows an absolute disregard for human life that is almost beyond belief, as the man got out he through a lit match into the car setting it and Evelyn Foster on fire.

As the flames took hold and started to burn their way though Evelyn’s clothes she somehow managed to free herself from the inferno that was once her car and crawl to a safe distance. Before losing consciousness she remembered hearing another car stop, men’s voices, and a car drive away.
There were some conflicting issues with Evelyn’s story, she was not raped nor was she bruised where she said she was struck, she was thought to have been sitting in the burning car for some while and It would have been impossible for a man to drive the car in the position she said her mysterious attacker was sitting.

What ever happened on that Tuesday night of 6th January 1931, after her death, the coroner’s jury was unanimous it was murder by person or person’s unknown.

Let’s now go back to Ernest Brown it was only 20 months later that he was found guilty of the murder of his boss Frederick Morton, although a shotgun was the murder weapon, fire was used to try and cover it up. The killing took place only 100 miles away, near Tadcaster in Yorkshire.

The description that poor Evelyn Foster gave of her attacker was a perfect match for Ernest Brown he was a smart dresser, wore a bowler hat and spoke with a Tyneside accent just as she described.

On the scaffold with only seconds left to live, the chaplain told him: “You should use these last few moments to confess your sins and make your peace with God.” As the Pierrepoint was about to pull the lever he was thought to have murmured: “Otterburn.”

Was this Ernest Brown making a confession to the almighty before they were to meet face to face? I think so. I think that Brown was not only capable of such inhumanity and but wouldn’t have thought twice before carrying it out such a heinous act therefore in my opinion: Guilty as never charged.

This time of year is traditionally associated with high spirits as revellers welcome in another year.
However, a spirit of a different kind has been causing a bit of a commotion outside Coalisland in County Tyrone.
Supposed sightings of a ghost have led to crowds of people descending on the Brackaville area over the holidays.
“It looks an old woman with a white dress and a long white cape down her back,” said 17-year-old Ryan Bell who claims to have seen the ghost at least six times.
“Along Flush Hill there are three telegraph polls and she appears to come out of the hedge at the second poll, run across the road and stop at the same spot every time.
Ryan’s father Raymond runs a pub a short distance from where the ghost has supposedly been seen by him and others.
“I wasn’t scared when I saw her, I just got the creeps,” said the teenager who didn’t believe in ghosts before his experience.
“She would have been in hers 80s or 90s, she also looked very sad and as if she was lost.”

There was a queue of up to 60 cars looking for the ghost
Sinn Féin Councillor Desmond Donnelly said would-be ghostbusters had been flocking to the area.
“At one point, there was a line of up to 60 cars on the Mullaghmoyle Road with people trying to spot it,” said Sinn Féin Councillor Desmond Donnelly.
“It wasn’t just one night, it was going on for a week or so over the holidays. I wouldn’t be one for ghosts, but you know how this type of thing spreads.
“If you ask me, it’s more likely to be a reflection of the moon on the river that flows through the area. Although the talk is that what was seen was in the shape of a person.”
Pat Hughes, speaking at the Central Bar in Coalisland, said the sighting had got people in the town talking.
“Everybody’s been talking about it in the bar and it has also caught the imagination of young people,” he said.
“It has got to the stage where it’s a bit like a drive-in movie.”

An abandoned nest-like structure was found covered by branches and grass in the remote forests of Arizona, in the Southwest United States. The discovered lair is believed to be a possible home of the legendary Bigfoot.
Researcher and Bigfoot expert Mitch Waite and his wife discovered and filmed the nest. With a narrow entrance and hollowed inside, the lair is buried halfway underground in the deep woods of the Tonto National Forest on the Mogollon Rim. The nest is reported as belonging to a big-foot type creature called the Mogollon Monster.

A lost king, did anyone else see the doc last night on the whole story…what a find, it was remarkable that he was found under the letter R in the car park of the social services building in Leicester !!! One womans four year old battle to find him and they struck gold in the first trench….it seemed like he was ready to be found !!!

So interesting about the two different opinions on how he was percieved, one train of thought was that he was a murdering, twisted, power hungry man who ruled the land with no heart, and the other side was that he was a thoughtful, warrior who was well thought of and was the people’s king !!!

I have always been intriguied about the story of the Prince’s in the tower and the story of Perkin Warbeck ( the pretender), apparently the Queen has declined permission to DNA testing on the bones of two children found buried by one of the towers at the Tower of London, possibly the two Princes. Maybe , now we know the DNA mitochondrial print of Richard, we can find out if the two skeletons are that of his nephews, the Princes.

Maybe not though….reason being, King Edward 5th, Richard’s brother , was apparently considered to be the bastard son of an archer who his mother was having an affair with. Edward was blond, big built with flaxen hair, whereas his brothers were slim, almost gracile, with dark hair and sharper features, this would mean that if it was true, our Queen may not be a true decendant to the throne !!!!! so i doubt that she will be forthcoming with permission !!!

Without the protection of the mediums they are surely entering something that could have disasterous concequences. I mean, maybe Karl and Stuart may not care what happens to them, but what about the rest of the production team ?… not just the investigation team, but the sound man, the electricians, engineers, security staff etc, they will all be there and can get affected as much as Karl ….it worries me…….OMG can you imagine Cath Howe dealing with the Devil ???

I don’t agree with the post from Sue Hodgett on FB, …yes those episodes she mentioned are very popular…but there are many many more that come to mind that were much more interesting and weren’t about Satan, Witchcraft or the darker side of the paranormal.

I can’t believe that someone would be so cruel and evil to fatally wound a mother dog so they could steal her pups, it is unthinkable…those pups may not survive without their mother, i guess they will be sold either for dog fighting or drug induced hoodies….perish the thought on either, my gawd, if \Karl wants to find the Devil, he doesn’t have to go on a haunted vigil to find him, he can look around him, there are plenty of evil people about right under his nose !!!

One of my friend’s had 5 staffordshire bull terrier puppy’s for sale –a man come to view the pup’s yesterday –going under the name of peter heartright– my friend has woken up this morning and all the pup’s have been taken from her home in maidstone the mother off the puppy’s is at this moment at the vet’s with a cracked scull and two broken leg’s they think she was stamped on over six time’s and sadly she wont make it– but more to the point the puppy’s wear not ready to leave mum//So if anyone see’s or hear’s of someone selling 5 pure blue pup’s please let me no by comment/inbox–and please please Home check the person and find out more info before telling someone on facebook your address.

I’m only putting this up as there still seems to be quite a few people who don’t think that the new series of MH will be as good without a medium, though some people still seem to assume that mediums will be making an appearance, I’ve put this on another thread but don’t want it to get lost amongst the other posts as it seems an important element to the show to many of you; ‘I’m reliably informed that another good reason for the new series of MH having a demonologist and not a medium is that the new series is darker than ever before. That being the case, it may be that that the team don’t want to put any medium in the position that David Wells found himself in when Karl refused protection nor do they want any medium going in ‘playing up’ for the cameras with posessions etc. The fact that people keep saying that people tuned in purely for the mediums, well..sorry but look at peoples favourite episodes of MH: the Pendle Witches, The Ram Inn where Stuart was attacked, Hellfire caves, anything with any mention of the ‘devil’ etc..people tuned in to see the darker element far more than they did to see Karl and Yvettte having a nice conversation with someones Aunty Mable! A new series dealing head on with places that have a history of poltergeist, ‘demons’, witchcraft, evil entities.with Freds knowledge and Karls ‘adventurous’ nature….surely that will be enough to keep the new audience hooked? 😉 xxx’ MH…welcome to the dark side..cooool…mwhahaha!!

I recorded Great houses with julian Fellows as i’m a big fan of his Downton Abbey and as you know BIG HOUSES!!! the first one i’ve watched is Burghley house in Lincolnshire !!! never visited it , making it a future event sometime , stunning property and was owned by Queen Elizabeth 1st right hand man Cecil Burghley , the man responsible for holding Mary queen of Scots death warrant under his arm for so long and trying to get her Majesty to sign it , accordingly she was unaware of what she was signing?????? how can you not know.

Yes they were upset but i would have liked to hear more about what they experienced when they lived there ……….. i guess they did not realise how badly the house would affect them when they returned.

Poor Jeremiah !!! what a sad story…premonition ? i’m not sure ….maybe, if indeed Sarah did dream BEFORE the murder took place then yes, it is very strange…but…These stories have usually been exaggerated over the years, and added to, so i’m a LITTLE bit sceptical about it. Good story though

Karl certainly does seem to be obsessed with hanging doesn’t he, how macabre,
I remember when he did the hanging stunt on MH, people were ringing and complaining about it, saying that he shouldn’t show it in case anyone copied him !!! well i’m sorry but if anyone was THAT stupid then …….well i shan’t say it..but you know what i mean !!!

I have conflicting ideas about corporal punnishment, on one side i think yes…an eye for an eye,…. and some of the evil people who get “life” which can be as little as 8 yrs, deserve to be taken from society forever…and ever, whether they should be killed or not is another matter !!!!

There must be so many innocent people who were hung or shot or put in the electric chair or injected !!!! not so much now though as we have the benefit of forensic science and dna sampling….

maybe if forensics and DNA both determine that there is no possible doubt of a crime, then the punnishment should fit and they be castrated, murdered etc.

2 February 1933 – Jeremiah Hanbury

Jeremiah Hanbury 49 Executed 2nd February 1933

Although this crime seems a simple open and shut case of murder within a love triangle (if that can ever be described as simple), what makes it more interesting is what happened the night before the crime took place.

In the early hours of 16th October 1932 loud, blood-curdling screams were heard coming from the home of Sarah Pratt, enough to guide her neighbours into thinking murder was afoot. But it was her terrified reaction to a nightmare…a nightmare of a murder that would happen the following day.

In her terrified state she described her vision to her concerned and rather shocked husband who was doing his best to comfort her. She recounted a horrific seen, her very own uncle, Jeremiah Hanbury, his hands covered in blood and his throat slit wide open. She described a policeman being with and him being taken away in an ambulance. What had happened to Jeremiah?

Once a happy man with everything to live for Jeremiah Hanbury’s had taken a turn for the worse. He was invalided out of his beloved army, but found employment at an ironworks in Brockmoor, Staffordshire, which he enjoyed. Sadly his wife died suddenly in 1928 and the following year the ironwork where he worked was shut down to build a housing estate and he was again unemployed.

Now in his late 40’s he couldn’t get any more work and with the loss of his wife depression took its debilitating hold and he became increasingly withdrawn which deepened with every passing day. The only people he seemed to have any communication with were his niece Sarah, who had the nightmare and his closest childhood friend James Payne, who lived with his wife 39 year old Jessie.

On the afternoon of 17th October the day after Sarah’s dream, Hanbury was seen leaving the Payne’s house by their neighbour a Mrs. Elizabeth Harris. This in it’s self was not an unfamiliar occurrence as we was a frequent visitor, but this time there was something noticeably different, his hands were covered in blood and his throat had been savagely cut.

Alarmed at the sight in front of her Mrs. Harris instinctively screamed out loud, she was quickly joined by another neighbour. By this time Hanbury had staggered away so both neighbours followed the trail of blood into the Payne’s house. The scene before them had an immediate effect, they both screamed. In the kitchen Jessie Payne lay dead on the floor in a pool of hers and Hanbury’s blood, blood which seemed to cover the entire area.

When the police eventually arrived an officer turned Mrs. Payne’s corpse over, although the body moved as expected, the head stayed in its grisly resting place, it had been completely severed. But that wasn’t the end of horrific scene as the whole of the right side of her face and forehead had been caved in, the murder weapons a bloodstained hammer and razor lay beside her.

An immediate search was launched for Hanbury, who was quickly found staggering along a road only half a mile away. He was subdued, arrested and taken to hospital. It seems that his nieces nightmare had transcended from dream to reality in a mystical form of premonition.

It was soon realised that Hanbury had been having an affair with Jessie Payne, when her husband found out he confronted Hanbury and told him to stop. Hanbury had other ideas and thought he could carry on but when Jessie too rejected him, it was too much for him bear and his fragile mind snapped. He attacked her so violently that blood splatters where not just on the floor but smeared over the walls and even the ceiling. After the attack he tried to kill himself but failed.

After he was charged with Jessie’s murder, his defense was “I don’t remember any of it,” and that was story he stuck to throughout his trial. A plea of insanity was rejected by the jury, the judge saying that an uncontrollable impulse did not in law amount to insanity. If Hanbury knew what he was doing, he was guilty of murder.

The jury agreed and found guilty, Hanbury was hanged at Birmingham’s Winson Green Prison on this day, 2nd February 1933. He wanted no blinds-down mourning as was the custom then, he had told his sister when she visited him. “I want you to get hold of the blind and draw it down, but not let it stay down. Just let the blind flick back up and say, ‘Poor old Jerry. He’s gone.’”

It was reported that he spent the few hours of life singing loudly in his cell.
