I think the first MH ep I watched was a Series 10 one and the first live was the Eight Faces of Evil one, so I’m a bit of a Johnny come lately to the world of MH, but I love researching my fandoms, and I did love MH originally, but I quickly found some slightly dis-tasteful things which soured that love very quickly. I still love the old favourites, but not so keen on the shenanigans on and off camera.
The house does look bare, mind you, that might be a good thing for us as in the past few days, we’ve been puppy-proofing the house in preparation for Dexter coming home. Artie’s been ripping things up and is no doubt planning to topple something over onto her little bro as soon as she gets the chance.
Loads of cats, eh? They’ll all wrap you around their little paws, cats are good at that. “Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.” 🙂

Truth is nobody understands the £20 thing at the end of the Mary loves Dick clip (Derek has some hilarious possessions, must remember to post some of them, they are corkers XD Shame the one where he was possessed by a monkey has been taken down), but Conwaygate, Claire has linked a great article about it. So far, it seems that it was 8-on-1, Karl, Fred, Patrick Matthews, Stuart, Chris Burton and Ciaran made online comments that were quickly deleted, from what I understand, Lesley, Yvette, Fred and Karl would undermine him constantly on the show, Lesley commented that “Chris will have to try a bit harder with the spirit world” Yvette shushed him whenever he was about to say something, Karl always shoved him in the Hub and Fred took a few swipes at him on MHL about the protection he gave Paul and other things “the hook appears to people who aren’t protected” when moments before they’d said he’d protected Paul and he was scratched. At least Ciaran tried to make it right with Chris in the end when he worked with him a few times (is this why he’s no longer with MH? Fraternising with the enemy?) It really blew up when Chris left the show and the online fight ensued, but the roots were there from the start. Whatever your contract said 8-on-1 seems a little heavy handed, no?
Chris’ lady (wife by now, I guess judging by the pic taken in… looks like Summer 2011) Carole-Anne issued a statement on 20th March 2010 which read:
“My name is carole-anne.I’m chris fiancee.just to let you know i’ve ordered him to take a few days off. He is going to make himself ill. He is the flattest i have ever seen him both emotionaly ans physically.thanks for sticking up for him through this hellish week. The final straw was the way I found him after reading a… comment posted by someone on a former colleagues facebook. I won’t dignify them with naming them.”
It’s the injustice that stings most of all.
David, Chris and Gordon were my favourites, they were all the sort of man that I think would have been good to have a chat to, David has such a sense of humour, Chris is kind and gentle and Gordon would have plenty of great stories to tell. Add Richard and Ciaran and a few rounds of whatever takes their fancy and that sounds like a pretty fun night. 😀
I know where you’re coming from re: Fred and, I’m sorry, Simon, I know you really like him in particular, but his behaviour does raise a few eyebrows. Owned a strip club while lecturing Chris about “integrity issues”, helping to gang up on Chris 8-on-1 all the while claiming to adhere to the principals of Wicca, the film Killer B***h (I believe it’s currently sitting at 1.6/10 on the IMDB) his behaviour towards that poor 21 year old lass on Yvette and Karl’s Stag and Hen, I could go on, but it would sound too much like character assassination if I did, I think most of that speaks for itself and I think Simon’s upset enough as it is.
In short, he owned Caesars from the mid-90s to late-2010 and lives at The Clockhouse, spoke to Karl about it for the team to come up, they got chatting and spent hours getting to know each other and became close friends, about 6 years later-ish, Yvette and Karl mentioned demons and by coincidence, Fred happened to have an interest in studying them, so they introduced him on the live shows. He said that he would rather they didn’t have mediums, which Karl also thought and in 2011, when MH returned for a one off ep, they didn’t have a medium because they wanted more a science-based methodology, but how then to include Fred? Surely they could not be claiming to be cutting mediums to have a more science-based methodology and then take for granted the existence of demons, that does not make sense and little nit-pickers like me would leap on it, so they needed a different tact. So that, IMO, is how he got the job as the historian, a close friend in the position is a strategic placement and it keeps the team as a united front, not to mention it prevents one more fight with an outsider.
You might think I’m being an appalling cynic with that last, but, as Sir Humphrey said to Jim Hacker “a cynic is what an idealist calls a realist.”
Lesley will not be back in the next series and I don’t think Phil will be either.

@Claire: Not long to Dexy Day now, three more sleeps. 😀 We got out the cats carry case to get it ready to bring out lad home in and got some fresh sheets and washed the case so that Dexter wouldn’t feel intimidated by the smell of cat. We put the case down and Artie seems to know whats going on very well, as she normally never goes near it and it takes the four of us two attempts to get her into it, but this time, she went into it and sat down. Obviously she’s thinking “I know I normally hate this case, but it’s *mine*, not Dexter’s and he can’t have it.”

I know he had a scrap with Billy Roberts a few years ago (2009, I think) and it started with a few comments on FB which progressed into nasty emails; but recently, Billy Roberts commented on a friend of a friend’s wall, who had said I don’t know what about MH, but a friend of his said not to mention MH if they were on Billy’s list, but Billy said words to the effect of whatever they were saying about MH was probably true. Did that friend bit make any sense? XD

The only gardening involved in Derek’s book will be digging up the past. 😉 I think it will be *very* interesting, did you see his book The Psychic Adventures of Derek Acorah? I found it in a bookshop and I was looking for a particular bit about the beginnings of MH and that was an interesting read from what I did read, I didn’t read all of it, as I had a bus to catch, but with that in mind, I’ll be very interested to see what new light he throws on those times, and the consulting of the lawyer is very interesting, he must be out for blood. 😉
Hopefully when we know where the vigil will be you can all come, it’ll be great to finally meet you all; hell, even Simon could come if he wanted to, but he won’t. Anyway, surely he’ll have a MHL that night? 😉

I’m not so sure as we would, I think with MH and the rise of the paranormal tv shows elsewhere (Derek, Colin, Sally), came the need to show people that not only could this be faked, but it could be faked with shocking ease, if not always consciously. I know you don’t like him, but please *please* watch Derren Brown’s Seance, it really does explain a lot, it starts off with tricks of old and moves on to a group ‘communicating’ with the spirit of a young woman, then there is a *big* twist at the end.
In another reply, I mentioned that there were comment boxes to fill out at psychic shows. They are not compulsory and I don’t think all stage mediums use them, but the ones that do there is an area where a message can be left for the medium and a lot of people use these to write a message about a loved one who has died, hoping that they’ll come through, these are then looked at by staff and passed on to the medium on stage through an ear piece; this was how Sally wads found out a fan was beside a window from whence she could hear the staff explaining about a man who had suffered with a bad back and gave a name, all of which Sally came out with a few moments later, complete with expression of pain in her back. Also, some mediums use eavesdroppers who mill about with the crowd before the show starts, listening to their conversations and passing on what they heard to the medium. On an ep of Psychic Sally, she took off the mic, but then took something else out her ear, which was recognisably an earpiece.
On a separate note, have any of you seen the South Park ep ‘The Biggest Douche in the Universe’? It parodies John Edward superbly, one of my favourite episodes ever, absolutely hilarious! XD
I’m familiar with Simon’s backstory, I appreciate that he’s very passionate about MH, that it means the world to him, I get that, really I do and I don’t grudge him his opinion on it, I would just question that surely not *all* ex-MH staff are bad?
Shame Degsy isn’t forthcoming about the info, maybe he’s saving it all up for the book? 😉 Or maybe he just doesn’t like going over the memories too often. These questions get asked all the time, to past and present MH members, much to their annoyance, the past MH members don’t like talking about it, but you just have to look at MHTNG and the sheer amount of times “when’s it coming back?” is asked and you can almost hear Simon smacking his forehead against his keyboard.

There was a big think made by Karl about Chris’ manners “You’re so polite” and same with David, courtesy forbade him from telling them just how upset and angry he was by the end. It became very difficult viewing.
That stuff about Gordon was sad, if it’s true, then poor guy, I had also heard that he allegedly wasn’t happy with the show being scripted, as a lot of ex-staff had claimed it was and that Derek himself had allegedly had a script, then I hear Chris saying that after he met Derek he realised that “we had been treated the same by people.”
I still want to know what happened to his column in Silent Voices, he had one in January last year, in which he had discussed leaving mH, but not that’s completely vanished and seems untraceable and another column in March last, but aside from his interview, it’s all gone, which automatically makes me suspicious and reminds me that I should make copies of everything, print it out and photocopy it a few times.
Don’t be, as long as you steer close to the facts and clearly signpost opinion, then the MH Mafia shouldn’t be able to complain too much. 😉 I joke, of course.

Poor Chris, I always believed in him on the show, he had dignity and was so unassuming and to his credit he never forced his opinions or pushed himself forward in any way.
I think we all know that the different mediums have been used and abused on the show, David Wells couldn’t have been better for the show…..he was amazing, another respectful gentleman who told the truth as he saw it without bowing to the “showbiz Circus” that surrounded him .
I hate to say it, but I really don’t like Fred Batt, he’s too slippery and seems to think he’s something that he’s not….where did he come from I ask ???? Where does he stand so high that he can look down on such honest men with more integrity in their little finger than he has in his whole body….sorry for the rant, I just hate people being abused in such ways.

Dont know if you watched Chris Packhams latest show on bbc2 ?……… anyhow one of the stories was about the Pufferfish.
Just last year they found out that the Pufferfish makes pretty circular pictures on the Seabed……decorating them with sea shells and pebbles,- they are stunning!!- to attract a lady Pufferfish…… i mean to me that is amazing….. there is so much to learn and if money is not even looking in the Paranormal direction how are we going to discover anything!
I mean real ££££money££££ is spent to look at Pufferfish…… correct tech term…. Marine Bio lol and yet…. that behaviour i described was found by accident ……..just last year!!!??
So until the Paranormal becomes accepted as an actual science and given funds ?????
For me there is simply too much anecdotal evidence to just dismiss it ….

yes i knew what T*at meant and it aint twinkle toes !!!! no i wasn’t happy at him having a pop at some of the people we like so that and the language riled me a bit , but like i said to Si it is his opinion , i just dont agree this time.

David Wells is a classy man, can’t argue with you there. 😉
He did, Jon’s manner does put people’s backs up, which does not endear him and what he might have to say to them, but he does have some good points there, they’re just very pointy points.
Oh I think Derek will time it perfectly, I think that’s why it’s taking so long to announce a release date. 😉 Problem is, when it’s released, and if there is some *really* juicy stuff in it, there will be an epic online fight. I’ll be watching with interest to see what revelations come to light and where they lead.
David Wells is awesome, and if he won’t go back on MH, we know what the solution is. 😉 It would be an epic series as the ex-MH lot are still very popular with a lot of the fans.
For all its sins, MH did do some good, I don’t think anybody could reasonably deny that, it’s because of MH that I met Ken, you, Nikki, Tracey and a lot of other wonderful people. 🙂

There is, it’s a good account of the tail end of Conwaygate. It just states the facts and what was said by whom, and that is a very good way of telling it, letting the facts speak for themselves.

I know what you mean, I do respect and like some of the people he was slating (he does like Richard, though and admits that the show was a lot better with him and Derek, by ‘better’ I think ‘fun’ is more accurate, although it was still fun with Gordon there, as I loved the chemistry between him and David.) I think you’re right, and they are as much innocent victims as he was.

@Nikki: My reaction was similar when I first read it, after hearing everything I’d heard about the antics at Antix, I was not surprised that this was coming to light, on the other hand, it brought one point home very clearly do *not* underestimate Karl, he likes to play down his intelligence, but the reality is he is capable of a lot more.
So do I, Richard, David, Phil, Chris and a lot more besides were hurt badly by TPTBeattie, which is why I always wince when I see people ask them “will you be back on MH?” as I think “mate, that’s not a wound you want to open again” they always get a firm “no” in response. Give ‘em all their own show! I’ve been saying it for years, but so far no takers, well, not exactly none, Psychic and Science was a taker for Richard/Chris and Richard/Derek, good to see them back together, they were a great combination and great for Chris and Richard to meet, also Chris and Derek met once or twice; I bet they all had so much to talk about. 😉
Your conclusion is similar to the one that we came to on EG, MH is a double-edged sword, yes some of what happened was horrible and worthy of contempt, but it brought us all together, so there is that that we should take heart from. It’s not simply black and white.

@Claire: With respect, I have already made a statement to Simon about the intentions of my comments, I don’t know what more I can say.
If he has a go at me, then I should be able to defend myself, as you can’t expect someone to take those kinds of comments lying down, but if he allows himself to get so wound up by a legitimate question, statement of fact, or backed-up opinion, then he proves my point. I cannot hold off on stating the facts or asking questions because it might offend Simon, as that would stand in the way of the expression of truth and to look upon all people on the forum as a friend or colleague, you must be unafraid to state your case and speak your mind. Life’s too short to be walking on eggshells every time you log in. Unfortunately, the ambiguity of online chat will always be there in this case, so there’s not really many ways around that, we just have to take what we can from this and try to move forwards.

The MLD clip was hilarious, but I think you’re right, I think it was just what happened when they passed back to David Bull in the studio, the bit I am homing in on was the “does Derek win the £20, then?” “yeah!” part. What was the bet on?
I should probably have explained better before, Jon Donnis is a *very* hardline and unyielding skeptic, and a man whom I have had the pleasure of crossing swords with in the past. He introduced himself by having a go at my friend, so initially I was none too welcoming, but once we’d cleared the dispute up, we had a reasonable chat and he is not a nasty man. I know you must doubt me after that article and I don’t blame you, his methods and way of speaking can be *very* abrasive (hence the initial row) but his heart is ultimately in the right place and I was able to learn a lot from him. Don’t get me wrong, “the most famous and feared internet skeptic of all time” does have quite the ego on him, but he’s not one of the bad guys really.
I think the thing he grudges is that Antix have mediums on MH, but in the next instant, they are offering £250’000 to anyone who can prove to them personally that they are psychic, Karl’s attitudes on MH to The ‘Great’ Unexplained ‘Debate’ are very different, and I think he feels that MH profiteers on the beliefs of their fans, while inwardly they are laughing. I think that’s his issue with it, but I also think he’d have something to say if he thought I was speaking for him and I think I’ve also missed quite a few of his other bugbears with MH. BP was founded to expose Colin Fry and Derek Acorah at the start of the 2000s, but branched out into MH, but just because he is there to expose what he feels is a fraud, he is on good enough terms with Colin Fry (who regards him as necessary to expose wrongdoing) and Derek and Gwen Acorah. Just because he is on the other side of the fence to them doesn’t mean they can’t be civil. 🙂
I can’t wait to read Derek’s tell all memoirs, they should be a cracking read.

@Debby: There’s a lot of past history with MH and their treatment of people who had served their usefulness. Did you hear about Conwaygate, or the way Richard was apparently fired? The treatment of mediums we could spend a whole afternoon on.
The article on the MH Mole was first published on the BadPsychics page before it closed in the summer of 2010, it re-surfaced briefly on the BadPsychics forum and I think it’s come back now because Jon is hinting he may come out of retirement.
I’m sorry that it’s shaken your faith in MH, but I hope it explains a bit more why I am suspicious of Antix and why I was worried about what would happen with Simon.
